Almost True book launch

So I left my flat and, I tell you, there are PEOPLE out there. They are REAL, or at any rate author Keren David and Karen Ball of Working Partners are. Also Maurice Lyons of Franklin Watt, who looks gratifyingly like what part of my inner soul feels a publisher should look. Like.

The one thing lacking was a sufficiency of glasses, and so there was no alcohol for me and I was obliged to mingle with humanity unadulterated, which makes me look at people funny and hide in the corner. But the reason for the lack of glasses was a good one – I was at kerensd’s book launch and she is highly popular. Speak not of one author, a publicist and a dog, this was a packed-out Waterstones. And, cleverly, FW had found a real-life teenage boy to read from Keren’s Almost True. He did not sniff any drugs, mug anyone or even listen to repetitive music for at least the couple of hours he was there. So it’s true; like Keren’s very engaging central character Ty, teenage boys are human!

Nevertheless, I found a corner. I can’t help it; in the children’s department of a bookshop I make a beeline for the licensing section and note what’s selling etc. Tonight I learned that Peppa Pig, Dr Who and Ben 10 are popular. Um, big news. Really didn’t need to spend time working that out. Still, Almost True was tonight's sell-out. Time for a range of lift-the-flap tie-ins? Hm...

  1. People? Real people? Now why do you get to see real people when I only saw - well people who think they are people? (Okay, it was Budget Day and I am still wondering if politicians are real! :-) )

  2. Thanks for coming Anna, and it was great to meet you, albeit briefly - we'll have to have a coffee next time.

  3. Nice to meet you to, Keren. Cat, I'm afraid politicians are real too. But I recommend avoiding their book launches.

  5. Nice to meet you too, Karen. Blogging about social events is much more me than social events are.

  6. Love the idea of lift-the-flap tie ins, by the way, but dread to think what would be under the flaps.

  7. I think you'd have to have a letterbox flap with a firebomb underneath it.
